6 Ways To Prep Your Skin Before Makeup

Dear reader,

In today’s post, I will be sharing with you 6 different ways you could prep your face before diving into your makeup routine. Throughout the years, I personally kept on changing my routine and products (as we all do I believe) as I grew my experience and knowledge with different products available in the market. For today, I will be sharing with you my current skin prep routine, along with other steps you could prep your skin with.

  • Cleanse + Exfoliate.

This first step is important to do regardless if you’re applying makeup that day or not, taking care of your skin is key to your making looking good in the first place (but I’m sure you all already knew that). So, I won’t discuss this step any further as I’m sure we all already are aware of the importance of cleansing and exfoliating your skin. For me, I am currently enjoying the Seaweed collection from #TheBodyShop as I’ve been using the face mask from this collection for a long time, I thought of trying the other products in this collection, and to be honest, I have been enjoying them as well so far.

  • Rose Water.

I cannot remember if I have mentioned this in any of my previous posts, but I have been obsessed with cleansing my face with organic rose water for as long as I remember. It is my go to method to prep my skin before applying makeup. I would only recommend using organic rose water (as it’s the only ones I’ve ever tried) with a cotton pads to wipe off any excess dirt or face oil that is usually leftover on the skin after removing makeup. My first reason for applying this is because it definitely wakes me up every morning, along with cleansing and hydrating my skin for the day.

  • Serum or Face Oil.

Are we shocked I’m mentioning this product again? Don’t think so. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you would know how obsessed I am with this product, like really obsessed (and I’m sure some of you are over the fact that I keep mentioning it over and over again). But, nevertheless, this is my next step after taking off excess dirt with the rose water, I would apply this serum all over my face and neck before starting my makeup routine. I prefer the feeling of a serum or a face oil over a traditional face primer because I feel it hydrates the skin for a longer period of time, and it overall makes the foundation and makeup look better on the skin throughout the day. My tip would be to apply just enough, never apply a big amount as you don’t want your makeup gliding all over and not gripping on your face due to the oil.

  • Makeup Setting Spray.

I personally do not use makeup setting sprays anymore, because personally, I don’t believe it has any impact on how long my makeup lasts. Although, if you use it, many tutorials explain how applying this spray before and after makeup actually helped their makeup last longer during the day. Again, I haven’t tried this method before, but if you have feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

  • Moisturizer.

I have recently discovered and fell in love with this skincare brand, so far I have tried three of their moisturizers: Picture Perfect Day, Thirst No More, and Be Berry Juicy. My honest truth, I am obsessed with them, they do exactly what you expect them to do but better than many products in the market. I have to warm you that the three products I have tried are scented, you can definitely smell them once applying on the face, but the scent disappears throughout the day, especially if you put makeup on top of it. I use moisturizers as skin prep on days I know I will be applying minimal makeup, or on days I wear no makeup at all.

  • Face Primer.

Lastly, I had to include a face primer. Personally, I do not like face primers anymore, I used to be in love with them once the trend of applying face primers began, but I later found out that they did not do anything to my face or makeup. I used to love using the L.A. Girl Pro Prep primer, and I would still recommend it, but personally I prefer using serums or oils instead.

  1. Great post! I believe in prepping your skin with skincare before makeup, if that makes sense. Recently I’ve been using the Weleda Skin Food Light as my first step, or I’m really partial to MAC Strobe Cream as well. I have really dry skin, so I need that hydration!

    1. Thank you so much Erica for sharing this! I haven’t heard or tried the Weleda skin food brand before, and would love to give it a try xx

      1. No problem! There’s 2 versions of Skin Food, the original & the Light version. The original is super thick and greasy – better for the body. The Light version is more of a lotiony consistency, so it’s better for the face and/or hands.

      2. Oh wow I didn’t know that, I will definitely try them! I’ve been looking for a new body lotion actually xx
